What is Ramadan and why Muslims fast

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset—abstaining from food, drink, and intimate relations—while increasing Quran, charity, and prayer.

The Quran says fasting was prescribed so that believers may attain taqwa: mindful awareness of God.
